When should you actually book your maternity photos?

For most pregnancies, around 28 to 34 weeks is an ideal time for maternity photography.

At this stage, your baby bump is usually beautifully defined while many mums are still comfortable enough to stand, sit, change gowns and move through different poses.

There is no single perfect week, though. Your ideal timing depends on your pregnancy, your comfort and the kind of photographs you want to create.

The simple answer first

+

Best overall window

For most mums, 28 to 34 weeks gives a strong balance between a defined bump and comfortable movement.

+

Popular sweet spot

Around 30 to 32 weeks is especially popular because the bump is usually full without being too close to the due date.

+

Earlier can work beautifully

Twenty-eight or 29 weeks can be ideal if you are showing early, carrying multiples or simply feel better earlier in your third trimester.

+

Later is not automatically too late

Thirty-three or 34 weeks can still photograph beautifully if you feel comfortable and your pregnancy is progressing well.

Week by week maternity photography guide

28 weeks

Excellent early option with a clearly visible bump and often good mobility.

29 weeks

A strong balance between bump definition and comfort.

30 weeks

One of the most popular stages for creating a varied maternity gallery.

31 weeks

Excellent for fitted gowns, flowing fabrics and fine-art portraits.

32 weeks

Often considered a sweet spot for a full bump and strong portrait variety.

33 weeks

Beautiful prominent bump, with comfort becoming more important.

34 weeks

Still a strong choice for many mums who feel comfortable.

35+ weeks

Still possible, but timing, availability and proximity to delivery matter more.

Why comfort matters just as much as bump size

Maternity photography involves more than standing in one place. A session may include gown changes, standing and seated poses, partner photographs, family images and several different lighting setups.

You do not need to be particularly flexible or experienced in front of the camera. Gaurab guides you throughout the session.

The goal is to create beautiful portraits while you still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.

Is 32 weeks really the perfect time?

Thirty-two weeks is an excellent choice for many mums, but it is not a rule.

You should not delay a session that works better at 29, 30 or 31 weeks simply because you have heard that maternity photography must happen at exactly 32 weeks.

Think of 32 weeks as part of the ideal window, not a deadline.

What if you are expecting twins?

If you are expecting twins or multiples, your ideal maternity photography window may be earlier because the pregnancy can progress differently from a singleton pregnancy.

Rather than relying on the standard 28 to 34 week recommendation, speak with your photographer earlier and take your own medical team's guidance into account.

The goal is still the same. We want a beautifully visible bump while you are comfortable and it is appropriate for you to participate in the session.

How far in advance should you book?

  1. 01

    Choose your preferred photography window

Start by working out when you will be between approximately 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.

  2. 02

Book before you reach that stage

Booking early gives you more choice of dates and more time to plan your wardrobe, partner participation and portrait style.

  3. 03

    Already further along?

Still get in touch. Last-minute availability sometimes exists, and it is always better to ask than assume you have missed your opportunity.

Timing questions, answered

Choosing your week
Is 28 weeks too early for maternity photos?

No. Twenty-eight weeks can be an excellent time.

Your bump may already be clearly visible, and many mums still feel comfortable moving between different poses and gowns.

Is 30 weeks a good time for maternity photos?

Yes. Thirty weeks is one of the strongest times for a maternity session.

For many mums, it gives a beautiful balance between bump definition and comfortable movement.

Is 34 weeks too late?

Not necessarily.

Thirty-four weeks is still within the window we commonly recommend, provided you feel comfortable and your pregnancy is progressing well.

Planning your session
Should I wait until my bump is bigger?

Not always.

If your bump is already clearly visible and you are within the recommended window, there is usually no need to delay purely for size.

Does Brisbane weather affect when I should book?

Less so for studio maternity photography.

At our Park Ridge studio, lighting and the photography environment can be controlled regardless of rain, heat or humidity outside.

Can my partner and children join?

Yes.

Partners and children are welcome to be included, so choose a date that works well for the people you want photographed with you.
